MOMSTERjane

On the Kids' Health page in our May issue, we're helping readers figure out when their growing daughters should start seeing a gynecologist in addition to their regular pediatrician. The article features expert advice from Jennifer Ashton, M.D., an Ob-Gyn in Englewood, NJ, a mother of two tweens and the author of The Body Scoop for Girls (Avery), a must-read guide that may help you and your daughter better understand the ins and outs of puberty.

If your daughter is going through (or approaching) puberty, you probably have plenty of questions about topics like body hair, breast growth, acne, and more. Just post one below for Dr. Ashton by May 10, 2010.  She'll answer 25 questions by May 24, 2010. If yours is chosen, we'll send you a free copy of her new book. Ask away!

I have a question..  My daugther is 10 & is already developing, and not at a slow pace.  She has pubic hair, armpit hair, and pretty much skipped the training bra stage.  I developed early, but kind of figured it out all on my own.  I want to make sure that I'm helping her correctly, without being over-bearing, yes, she's in that, "I got it Mom" stage already as well.  I can tell she's overwhelmed & struggling with what is happening.  How can I make this transition as easy as possible for her, without being super over-invovled.  HELP!!!

My nine year old is very thin and has not shown any outward signs of puberty yet; however, her moods fluctuate greatly.  I have started tracking them and they are about a five week cycle.  Are there any homeopathic things that I can do to help keep her on an even keel?  When I notice that my husband is feeling upset or frustrated I make sure and feed him plenty of sardines and other fish,  are there any foods that will help her?

My daughter had her first period last May, at the age of 12. She has developed in every way.  She is not sexually active or even thinking about it.  At what age should she have her first paps smear?

My daughter had her first, extremely light period aug 09 and then didn't have any thing else until Mar 10, also very light. How long will it take for her body to regulate? Should i take her to the gyn to be evaluated? There is a family history of edenomytosis. (me, with very heavy and frequent periods from day 1 until dec 09 when I had a hysterectomy!)) but nothing else noteworthy. She is 14 and not athletically active or sexually active in any way. When should I start to worry and when should I just let mother nature take it's course?

I'm concerned about my daughter getting a lot of acne. She is 12-and-a-half and since age 11 gets a few blemishes daily, and recently has gotten blackheads on her nose. Her older brothers both have/had moderate to severe acne. They both saw dermatologists. Nothing really helped, accept my oldest finally tried Accutane. This worked for about 6 months. Then after that he gets blemishes here and there. My younger son gave up on dermatologist and is trying different over the counter acne treatments. Sometimes they work for awhile, but none of them work reliably. Both sons always followed each regiman morning and night. A friend told me she spoke to someone at a health foods and vitamin store, and they recommended pro-biotics and a natural acne soap. She said it is working so far for her son. Do you know anything about pro-biotics and acne? Or do you know of any other natural solutions for acne?
