I told my kids that I would pay for Senior Prom only.  If they wanted to go their junior year, that would be their expense.

I told my son that if I am paying for prom, he will agree to a cap on the expense.  He does work PT, but he knew he couldn't cover prom.  He had no problem with my guildlines.  I paid for the tux, flowers and the dinner before prom.  I know it is not as expensive for boys as it is for girls.  The tux was about $120.  You can't find a dress for that price.  My daughter is 12, so I better start saving.  Ugh...

thumbs up I like this!

We figure about $200 for prom, tux, dinner, flowers, tickets.  Its expensive, but its a more "adult" function for them.  They have to dress up and use the manners they've been taught.  It's a great experience before the bigger step, graduation!

I play it by ear, within reason.  There are unexpected expenses and my girls chip in for their part to cover the things I can't.

My boys aren't interested in the prom. One thinks it is a waste of money...the other doesn't have a girlfriend and doesn't dance. If they wanted to go they would have to foot the bill anyways.  I think it is overrated and has gotten way too expensive.
